Right around this time in NYC, as the days get hotter, a certain un-new yorkish snack sneaks it's way into the crowded street food landscape right between the pretzels, hot dogs and knishes - spicy mango spears. The mango spears are doused in lime juice, dusted with cayenne red pepper and served in a plastic bag, perfect for grabbing right before entering the depths of the sweltering hot subway platform. Just be sure to bring some wet wipes - they are pretty juicy and sticky!
If you aren't near a city street corner or Mexican beach where they slice, juice and pepper right in front of you, it's an easy snack to make at home. We also made some spicy pineapple spears as well to really kick the summery snack into high gear. The best thing about making it at home is you can cater it to your taste, by controlling how much lime and heat you add. I like mine with extra lime and medium spicy.
You can even pack it in an ice-cooler and take it to the beach - then after you scarf them down, you can just wash your hands off in the salty ocean. Now that sounds like summer!
What's your go-to summer snack?
