When I was 16, my parents gave me a surfboard for my birthday. It was the best surprise ever, and I felt cooler just for having it. My friend had been teaching me how to surf on the weekends, but to have my very own board meant I was a real surfer. Granted, I wasn't great at surfing and never really progressed, but for a moment in time I felt like the real deal. These days I am less about the surfing (somehow, with age, I became more fearful of big waves like a wimp) and more about the style. Also, my beloved board was swept away in Hurricane Sandy.
The surfer style I loved most was the rash guard. Conveniently, they are now in fashion for even non-surfers, and I'm loving it. They are totally having a moment and can be found in cute styles and colors that 16-year-old Marisa would have swooned over. 30-year-old, post-having-a-baby Marisa loves that they give more coverage for her less than beach-ready body. Plus, now most are made with sun-blocking material so you can stay stylishly safe and burn-free. I love the way they have an athletic, sporty feel so you can jump, play beach sports, and chase toddlers (or even surf!) comfortably without having to worry about your bathing suit riding up or falling down.
