Spring cleaning is a favorite springtime ritual of mine. There is something about cleaning with a cool spring breeze blowing in from an open window that welcomes the season with a fresh start, wiping away all the doldrums and dust bunnies of winter. After putting all my sweaters and down jackets away in storage for the season and organizing everything down to the kitchen cabinets, I feel lighter on my feet and in a happier mood. Then, the only thing a clean, organized house is missing is a bouquet of springtime flowers and some fresh smelling linens. Making your own linen spray is a simple way to infuse your newly cleaned home with relaxing and invigorating scents. We created two scents to spray on your linens in the morning and nighttime to start and end your day with!
Another ritual I love is my bedtime routine. I try my best to follow a few simple rules and try and create a relaxing and peaceful environment in my bedroom to help stave off insomnia, like avoiding any screen-time before bed. (Although I am currently breaking that one right now!) After making the "Get Some Zzzz's" spray with Lavender essential oils I added another step to my routine. I simply sprtiz the spray on my pillowcase before I get into bed and I've noticed how much calmer I feel before I fall asleep. According to Prevention Magazine, research has found that people who smelled lavender before bedtime slept more soundly and felt more energized in the morning. Lavender has also been proven to ease stress and anxiety, which often sneaks up on you right before you tuck in for the night! Since I'm a worrier, this cartoon and this cartoon sum up my thoughts right before I nod off!
After falling asleep to the calming scent of lavender, we felt we needed another spray to help wake us up and reenergize ourselves in the mornings. We made a "Wake Up" spray with eucalyptus essential oils to help invigorate us for the day. The smell of eucalyptus is so cool and refreshing - the instant you smell it you feel revitalized and less sluggish. I spray it on my bathroom towels because I love the way it smells after my morning shower and with the added steam from the shower I feel like I can breathe easier and clearer. It's the perfect way to start the day.
To make the linen sprays just follow these steps:
"Get Some Zzzz's" and "Wake Up" Linen Spray
- Lavender and Eucalyptus Essential oil
- Vodka or Witch Hazel
- Distilled Water
- a glass spray bottle (I bought mine at Whole Foods)
In separate container add 10-15 drops of one of the essential oils to the vodka (or witch hazel) and distilled water. Shake it up so it all mixes together and pour it into your spray bottle.
You can print out your own labels here and attach each label to the bottles. Leave the lavender spray on your nightstand and the eucalyptus spray in your bathroom and enjoy! The sprays are perfect all-natural additions to any morning or nighttime routine and they are really easy and affordable to make on your own, yet each make you feel like you are staying in a luxurious hotel or spa!
**Warning** Be careful with essential oils, you shouldn't use them in your first trimester of pregnancy or around babies, small children and pets etc. Since I'm not a doctor or an expert in this field, you can find a full breakdown of essential oil warnings here!
