As a big fan of Asian beauty product imports, I knew I had to try the latest craze, the konjac sponge. For those new to the konjac world - konjac is a root vegetable similar to a potato and once the fibers are made into a sponge, it becomes a completely natural and incredibly gentle way to cleanse and exfoliate your skin. Asian women have been including this root vegetable in their beauty routine for centuries and they finally have found their way onto our beauty shelves! It turns out that pregnancy was the best time to finally try this sponge out, since I had to ditch some of my more "chemically" beauty products for more natural ones.
I decided to try out Sephora's Clean Machine Konjac Sponge Duo because they were super easy to find, affordable and came in these super cute heart shapes that look adorable hanging in my bathroom (see below!). In the package there are two different sponges, one made with red clay and one made with pink clay. The pink is milder and more gentle, while the red is for dryer skin and is more moisturizing. I use the red once a week and find myself using the pink one almost daily, but you should find your own routine that works best for your skin-type.
Konjac sponges are really unique because they are hard as a rock when dry and seem like the most unlikely candidate for scrubbing your face, but after you soak them in warm water for 3-5 minutes they become soft and malleable and feel so good against your skin. Once the sponge is soft, remove the excess water, rinse your face with warm water and rub the sponge in small circles around your face. You can use the sponges with or without cleanser. Without any cleanser they just exfoliate the skin and remove any dry skin and oil build up. When used with cleanser they remove my makeup incredibly well- way better than washing my face or my normal facial wipe routine. I use it at night and sometimes before I put on my makeup in the morning since I find it creates a smoother application and makes my make up just look better. After using the sponges, my skin feels soft and renewed, just as soft as when I would use my fancier (and probably) harsher products. As with any kind of exfoliant I would avoid harsh rubbing around the eyes, scratches, cold sores, pimples that you popped that need extra healing, or any other abrasions, but supposedly konjac sponges are the most gentle way to exfoliate sensitive skin!
After you are finished using them, simply rinse out the sponge, gently squeeze out excess water and hang it to dry. Don't squeeze it too hard or wring it out or you'll damage the sponge. I love that Sephora's konjac sponges come on a string because when you hang them to dry, you avoid situations like letting them sit in their own dampness on your bathroom counter that could create mold. I leave them hanging out in the shower and they add a cheerful touch to my shower caddy. After one month you have to ditch them and get new ones, but they are eco-friendly and are biodegradable!
They have totally become a part of my routine and I can't wait to try out different types - I really want to try out this charcoal version that helps draw out impurities, and this aloe vera body sponge!
