I found this cocktail recipe on the website of Blackberry Farm, a luxury farm retreat in the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee, which I've been dying to visit. Because a vacation to Blackberry Farm is not in my immediate future, I decided to whip up one of their cocktails instead. This Strawberry Ginger Fizz has a luxury farm vibe to it - rustic and centered on produce, but elegant and sparkly, too. It's a perfect way to welcome in the flavors of spring and summer - I can definitely see how it would perfectly compliment a wooden rocking chair on a veranda overlooking farmland. But as it turns out, it tastes just delicious from a seat in Brooklyn, too.
To make the ginger simple syrup, pour 1/2 a cup of boiling water over 1/2 a cup of sugar and 1/2 a cup of peeled and coarsely chopped ginger in a lidded container. Cover and shake until the sugar is dissolved, then let steep for at least half an hour before straining out the ginger. Let cool and then refrigerate. You can save the rest for other cocktails, like this one, or use it in iced tea.
