When my Mom was little, my grandparents told her a secret about the bearded man in the red suit. They let her know that although he thinks milk is great and all, his real favorite drink is a Manhattan. So when leaving cookies out for Santa, my mom would dutifully mix up a Manhattan to score some extra brownie points with ol' Kris Kringle, hoping Rudolph does most of the driving that night. Yes, Manhattans are strong, but they are the perfect cocktail to relax with and sip after a long day, or after zipping around the world to 526 million houses in one night.
It was not only my grandparents' favorite drink, but it was also their nighttime ritual. The measuring, the mixing, the garnishing - signaled the end of a long day. Just the smell of a Manhattan transports me to my grandparents' basement, giving me a rush of memories and flashbacks. One of my favorite Christmas memories is when my Poppa, my husband and I stayed behind to set up Christmas Eve dinner while the rest of my family went to church. Drink-in-hand, he watched me and Jon dance in front of the tree to Classic Christmas songs, ooh-ing and ahh-ing and laughing at our silly spins and dips.
So in my grandparents' and Santa's honor, we bring you their favorite drink, the Classic Manhattan. Leave one out for the jolly ol' elf this year- he works hard!
