When I saw this recipe from Katie at the Kitchen Door, I knew this was a cocktail for me to try. She explains that she developed it as a sort of Dark and Stormy adapted to more wintery months, which is a perfect cocktail for right now...especially since this November has been downright balmy in NYC.
This drink has requisite flavors of the season - snappy ginger, apple cider, and jammy, tart cranberries - as well as the warm spice of dark rum. But unlike a lot of heavier winter cocktails, this one is bright and fresh, too...perfect for when you're sweating it out over a plate of thirds at Thanksgiving (is it gross that I fully embrace this as the season of overeating?!). It's as if your more brooding winter cocktail took a long weekend at the beach.

Another nice thing about this drink for the holiday season is that it's a snap to whip up- you even combine it right in the glass. The only slightly high maintenance part (in that you have to dirty a pot) is making the cranberry-ginger syrup. But this is a syrup worth stirring up...it's thick and flavorful and really satisfying. Sometimes the taste of flavored syrups are subtle, and get lost for me once the cocktail is combined. This one stands through and it made the drink for me. Plus I have some extra that I want to try out in other ways this holiday week...maybe in some tea or, as long as we're overeating here, atop some homemade pancakes!
I recommend making some cranberry-ginger syrup in advance this weekend and keeping it handy for mixing up this simple but unique punch for family and friends throughout the week. It's topped off with hard cider, which is a great (and appropriately American) addition to any Thanksgiving bar...but you could stick with ginger beer instead, if that's easier to get your hands on. I basically just love anything called a punch, don't you?? It's instantly ready for a party.
So party it up and enjoy!! Happy Thanksgiving!
