Happy Halloween weekend! This year I wanted to make a Halloween cocktail that was more Halloween-inspired, and less in-your-face, creepy brains in your drink sort of thing. I found this cocktail on Saveur and its dark red blood-like hue appealed to me along with the luxurious ingredients of bourbon, ruby port, maple syrup, bitters and Luxardo cherries. To me, it felt like something a vampire would drink as a nightcap before settling down in his coffin for the night. Vampires and spookiness aside, the drink is delicious with autumnal, rich and complex flavors.
Combine bourbon, port, syrup, and bitters in a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake hard and strain into a chilled glass, preferably a goblet fit for a vampire. Drop cherries in for a spooky, and subtle eyeball-like garnish on the bottom.
Find a printable version of the recipe here.
It was first mixed for a series for Saveur called Mixstrology where an astrologist/bartender makes a drink for each sign. It was made for Scorpio, an October sign, and named after Dante’s second circle of hell, Lust, again solidifying my whole vampire theory.
Enjoy while handing out candy to ghosts and goblins (or let's be serious, Minions and Elsas) all night. But beware, it has some BITE! MUHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHA..ha.ha...(sorry I had to!)
