There is nothing better than starting your day off with a fresh grapefruit....wait, yes there is - starting your day off with grapefruit brûlée is waaaay better. I first had grapefruit brûlée at Cookshop, a great place to stop for brunch near the High Line, and I was hooked. One of my favorite desserts is creme brûlée and and grapefruit is one of my favorite fruits so I don't know how I didn't think of this combination before.
It's super easy to make at home and looks way more impressive to your breakfast guests than it actually is.
First, cut the grapefruit as you would if you were going to eat it plain - slicing around the edge and down each wedge for easy eating. Then pat it dry with a paper towel. This is an important step that I didn't do the first couple of times and it really makes a difference.
Next, pour raw sugar over the top of the grapefruit.
Then, with a kitchen torch, heat the sugar until it melts and turns a darker, amber color. If you don't have a torch put the grapefruit under the broiler, cut side up, and watch it closely.
Et viola! Grapefruit brûlée! A sweet and refreshing breakfast treat.
