Maybe our drink should be called a "Cloudy 'n' Threatening"...since a true Bermudian "Dark 'n' Stormy" is supposed to be made with Gosling's Rum, and Gosling's Rum only. However, during this dark and stormy week in New York, we got a hankering for a "Dark 'n' Stormy" and had to improvise with what we had...and it turned out to be delicious!
We probably should rename our drink since "Dark 'n' Stormy" is actually trademarked by Gosling's Rum- which is rare in the cocktail world. If you have it on your menu, you are required to use the exact ingredients and recipe to properly call it a "Dark 'n' Stormy". Since we aren't running a bar, we decided to improvise with our favorite drink, using spiced rum we had on hand instead of Gosling's, and adding a squeeze or two of lime. Next time, a slice of ginger or two would help add some zing. It's fun to experiment with all the different ginger beers and rums out there because they all are so different - it's tastes like a new cocktail each time!
The drink is super refreshing, and the ginger adds a nice spicy kick. It's perfect to drink on a summer night when the air smells like rain right before a storm rolls in. So crack open a ginger beer, pour it over ice, add some rum on top (it should look like a storm cloud), sit back, listen to the rain, and enjoy!
